Eco-labels The first ecolabelled products

Our paints are awarded with many eco-labels: the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, EU Ecolabel, M1 classification measuring low emissions and allergy label.

The classifications help us to choose products that are better for the environment, health and safety. Eco-labels increase the knowledge regarding environmental and health impacts of paints and their product characteristics as well as indicate the proven safety characteristics.

The EU Ecolabel

The EU Ecolabel is the joint eco-label of the European Community (EU). The EU Ecolabel indicates that a product or service is kinder to the environment and of high quality. The eco-label is only awarded to products which meet the preset requirements regarding the burden on the environment throughout their life-cycle.

In 1997, the water-borne Joker, manufactured in Finland, was the first Finnish paint to receive the EU Ecolabel in Finland. In 1996, our Swedish paint brand Alcro was granted its first EU Ecolabel.

The Nordic Ecolabel, the Swan Ecolabel

The Swan is the official eco-label in the Nordic countries. It directs consumers to select products that are kinder to the environment and encourages manufacturers and service providers to produce such products. Paints labeled with the Nordic Ecolabel fulfill not only the strict environmental but also tight quality requirements, which cover the entire life-cycle of the products from raw materials to the manufacturing of the products, their use, and disposal of waste.

In 2006, Tikkurila in Sweden was the first Swedish company to receive the Swan Ecolabel for its interior products, and in 2009, we received the eco-label for our exterior paints. In Finland, we were granted the first Swan Ecolabels for our interior paints Joker and Remontti-Ässä in 2011.

Allergy and asthma labels

Allergy and asthma label indicates a product that meets the strict product-specific requirements and contains no fragrances or other generally irritating or sensitizing agents. The label helps customers select to products that do not generally irritate or sensitize the skin or cause respiratory symptoms. The products awarded the label are required to include detailed formulas and product information leaflets. Different countries have their own local criteria regarding allergy and asthma labels.

The solvent-free Remontti-Ässä is the first Finnish paint to have been granted the right to use the label of the Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation of Finland.

M1 certification

Building materials for interior use, such as paints, can be classified according to the compounds they emit into the air. In Finland, the Sisäilmayhdistys association for good indoor air has published a building material classification which divides products into three classes (M1, M2, M3). The classification has also aroused interest in the other Nordic countries and in the Baltic countries.

The M1 class is for materials that emit extremely low levels of compounds into the room space, while materials belonging to the M3 class generate the highest amounts of emissions. Materials that have not been tested do not belong to any class. M1 certification is granted by the Finnish Building Information Foundation to products that have been examined by an accredited testing laboratory and have undergone an organoleptic assessment. Many of Tikkurila’s products are M1-certified.
