What is primer?
A primer or undercoat is a preparatory coating applied to the surface before painting. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the material being painted.

How do I stop masking tape from ripping paint off the surface?
Use a low-tack masking tape like Deltec Masking Tape Sensitive or Axus Decor Razor-X Ultra Low Tack Tape. Low-tack masking tape leaves no residue on the surface and doesn’t pull any paint off when removing. Always remove masking tape while the paint is still wet to avoid ripping paint off once it has dried.

How long do I need to wait between coats?
Re-coat times vary between paint types and paint projects. Information on drying and re-coat times is available on the product page of the product you’re using on our website www.thepainthub.ie.

What roller should I use to paint my walls?
We recommend using the Two Fussy Blokes 9” Dacron or 9” Microfibre rollers when painting on interior walls, ceilings and wood. The Two Fussy Blokes 4” smooth and semi-smooth rollers are ideal for painting smaller areas.

I’m painting furniture in my home, what paint should I use?
We recommend using our Helmi range to paint any wooden furniture inside your home. The Helmi range comes in three finishes, Helmi 10 (matt), Helmi 30 (satin), and Helmi 80 (gloss). Helmi Primer, OtexAkvaandOtex are all suitable primers to undercoat interior wood.

What does the number in the name of the paint represent?
In the Tikkurila range, most paints have a number following the name. This number represents the finish level of the paint. For example, Luja 7 is a matt finish, Luja 20 is a semi-matt finish, and Luja 40 is a semi-gloss finish. The lower the number the closer the paint is to a matt finish and the higher the number the closer the paint is to a gloss finish. The same applies to the Optiva range, Optiva 3 is a dead-flat matt finish, Optiva 5 is a matt finish, and Optiva 7 is a satin finish.

Radiators should be primed using Otex and top coated using the Helmi range, Helmi 30 is the most popular finish for radiators.

Is Tikkurila’s interior wall paint washable?
Yes, our Optiva range is a durable emulsion paint available in a matt, satin or gloss finish and our Luja range is an extremely durable paint also available in a matt, satin or gloss finish.

Is there a paint to protect against mould?
Yes, our Luja range is an extremely durable, anti-mould interior paint that is ideal for the walls and ceilings in bathrooms and kitchens where the moisture levels are significantly higher. Luja will not eliminate existing mould or external moisture (damp) but will prevent mould and damp from creating internally.
